February 4 – February 7, 2014

Popcorn words:   at, that, with, big.  This week we found that the word at is found as chunks in many words!  Our popcorn words popped into our morning messages and even in our sight word books.  We practiced spelling the words and reading the words all week.

Writer’s Workshop:  This week we wrapped up our unit on writing small moment stories.  We spent some time fixing and fancying up one of our small moment stories and shared them with our 5th grade buddies. They were so proud to read their stories to the big 5th graders!!  Next week we will dive into writing How-to books.  We started thinking about this idea when we made our own “Monster Sandwich” books on Friday.

Reader’s Workshop:  We have continued our reader’s workshop time with talking about how we use multiple strategies to help us read.  Our Kindergarteners have bookmarks in their book boxes to help them remember what each reading strategy buddy helps them do when they are reading.  For example, chunky monkey helps us find word chunks to help us figure out a tricky word easier.  They are getting really good at working hard during this time to develop their skills as readers.

Math:  We are wrapping up our unit 3 and will be taking our test next week.  Whew!  This unit was a long one…lots of groups of 10 and teens numbers, finding equations that match sums. We have made numbers with objects in our classroom, played a memory game with our numbers in the teens and number equations cards.   I have been very impressed with the students.

Split. Lit:  This week we worked on our sight words by playing a fun game with snowballs!  No…..not real snowballs, paper snowballs.  The kindergarteners helped build a snowman by reading sight words on a snowball and filling up our snowman.  They did a great job!  Any extra practice you can do at home with sight words, spelling them or sounding them out together, will greatly improve your kindergarteners ability to recognize them when they see them in the books they read.  We also have been practicing writing our first and last names and lower and uppercase letters.

Take home books:  Thank you so much for the volunteers that have come in to read with us!  This is such a huge help and is the only way we could do this program!!  Thanks so much for reading these books with your kindergartener!!!  You can see that they feel like big kids when they get to go out and read with the volunteers.  We have passed down the hallway all year long and they have seen the big first graders reading their books to volunteers and now our kindergarteners are getting to do it.  We do our reading of our take home books at school on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.  Keep up the great work!!!

Estimation Jar:  So fun!!!!  Our kindergarteners have started getting a turn with bringing this jar home.  They love to see who can get the closest to the exact number and who will be next to take it home!!  It has been really fun!!

Button’s travels:  He is on his second round of sleepovers.  He is a master at hide and seek, seems to really like snuggling with all of our kindergarteners at bedtime but does have a habit of falling out of bed!  I love to see how excited our kindergarteners get when they get to hear about his adventures.  Button’s has even found long lost siblings…..check out our pictures below to see!

Olympic excitement:  This week we talked about the winter Olympic games and watched a short video on what the olympics look like.  The kindergarteners LOVED this video and were very excited to talk about these games and medals and all the different athletes.  We talked about how hard some of them work at their sports and how they never gave up and how we are all athletes to in learning and how we can never give up.  We are going to keep track of the medals that the united states wins and try to do our olympic best in our classroom too.  We are so close to earning another “fun day” with our stars for outstanding classroom behavior!!

Valentine’s:  We have decorated our valentine’s bags and have started to get some friends bringing in their cards.  If you wish to give out valentines please get your cards in soon so we can have enough time to hand them out before valentine’s day.

Mystery Reader:  This week our Mystery Reader was…….Mr. Rob!!!!  We have seen Mr. Rob in our building all year.  He drives a cool zamboni to clean up after us, fixes EVERYTHING in our building and can pretty much do anything we need!!  Mr. Rob is our head custodian at Georgetown Elementary.  He is an amazing person!!! The kindergarteners were so excited to have him read to us!  He read us the book I am Helping by Mercer Mayer.  Thanks for coming in Mr. Rob!!!
