February 20 – 24

Popcorn words: had, bad, and, get.  We talked about the short a vowel sound and short e sound by reading some easy reader books that the Kindergarteners got to bring home.

President’s Day:  We started our week by celebrating President’s Day on Monday.  We learned about President Lincoln and President Washington and why we celebrate them.  The Kindergarteners made their own President Lincoln and President Washington double sided figures.  The students received their own easy readers and also got to make their own hats, write with a feather (what the presidents used to write) and sort coins.

Math: This week we worked with partners to help build partners that make up 10.   We  learned about Math mountains.  The Kindergarteners are also beginning to explore 2-D and 3-D shapes.  Noticing the difference between these two kinds of dimensional shapes.  We are continuing our practice of adding and subtracting as well.  Every Friday the Kindergarteners love to play Math games that help us practice the weeks skills.  We are really becoming amazing Math magicians!!

Reader’s Workshop: This week we learned about a new reading strategy buddy, Picturing Penguin.  Picturing Penguin teaches us to picture the words that we are reading in our mind.  We practiced this all week by listening to a chapter book, Mercy Watson to the Rescue by Kate DiCamillo.  The kindergarteners pictured in their minds and even drew on whiteboards what it might look like and then compared what the illustrator drew on the pages. Below they drew what it might look like when Mercy pictured pancakes piled high to the ceiling.  They are becoming amazing readers!!  I am so proud of them!!!

Split Lit. :  This week we have been working hard on many skills.  We have been continuing to practice our lower case letter writing.  We will finish our handwriting book next week and be able to bring it home.  The Kindergarteners are also working hard on learning their sight words with word work at their split lit. stations.  Writing their words, practicing them with partners or a teacher have all given them practice with these words to help them know them in a snap.  Thank you for all of your help with practicing their F/A sight words at home.  I can see so much growth with many of them!

Writer’s Workshop: We have been working on our How-to writing genre.  The Kindergarteners LOVED learning how-to make their own sight word bottle.  They all had a chance to make their own and write their own How-to make a sight word bottle book.  We will continue to work in this genre a couple of days next week and then begin a new Non-fiction writing genre.

Mystery Reader:  Our birthday girl Alyson jumped up with excitement when she saw her Mom and Dad walk through the door as our Mystery Readers!  Mr. and Mrs. Herczak read us two great books.  Mrs. Herczak read us Dragons Love Tacos by Adam Rubin.  We definitely all said we loved tacos but don’t want to serve them with hot salsa or those dragons might get upset and burp fire!  Mr. Herczak read us I Love Cake!: Starring Rabbit, Porcupine and Moose by Tammi Sauer.  We loved how Moose ate the whole cake he couldn’t help that the cake fell in his mouth!  Then Moose made his friends another cake to share.  Thanks for visiting and reading to us Mr. and Mrs. Herczak.   If you would like to be a Mystery Reader feel free to sign up on the side of our blog or email me at jstutz1@hpseagles.net directly to set up a time.  I can be very flexible with time to accommodate your schedule.
