March 27 – 30

Popcorn Words:  We have not added any new sight words.  The Kindergarteners reviewed sight words this week and learned a few sight word games that they brought home.

Writer’s Workshop:  Before leaving for Spring Break we worked on our “on demand” All About Wolves books.  I was so impressed with how well the Kindergarteners did with writing these books!!  We gathered information on Wolves this week and wrote our facts we learned together.  Then with our facts each Kindergartener wrote their own All About Wolves information book.  After spring break we will be reviewing the different types (Small Moment writing, How To writing, Scientific writing and All About writing)  we have explored as Kindergarten writers.  We also celebrated our amazing journey of becoming Non-fiction writers by sharing our All About Wolves book with our friends from Ms. Yankee’s classroom.  We enjoyed a yummy animal cracker snack and watched some silly videos of zoo animals.

Reader’s Workshop:  We are continuing to work on using our story map to retell a story and find the heart of each story we read.  The Kindergartners have worked with their reading buddies to share a book, read a book and retell the story they have read.  Even having fun reading to their buddy they brought for P.J. day fun.  They are working so hard as readers!!

Math:  We reviewed our Math skills this week.  Playing different games, like the missing partner game.  We will jump into Unit 5 after spring break.

Science:  After Spring Break we will begin our study of soil and rocks.  A note went home asking the Kindergarteners to gather a collection of rocks.  This is due Friday, April 21.   Spring break may be a fun time to gather some interesting rocks.  Can’t wait to explore these with the kiddos!  I LOVE SCIENCE!!  This is one of my favorite units we do!!

Reading Week:  This week we celebrated being readers!  On Thursday we had a very fun P.J. day traveling to the different Kindergarten classrooms to hear some favorite stories.  Each Kindergarten teacher read a story and did a fun activity with the Kinders.  So fun!  We were also surprised by many Mystery Readers throughout the week.  Our class even surprised Ms. Yankee’s Kindergartners as a Mystery Reader for them!!  Thank you ALL so much for supporting our push to get in as many Mystery Readers as possible during our March is reading month!!  We were able to have over 15 Mystery Readers surprises!!  If you would like to be a Mystery Reader please sign up on our signup.com link or contact me at jstutz1@hpseagles.net.

  • Lilly was soooo excited to see her Nana and Papa walk through the door.  They were pretty sneaky….they were visiting Lilly for the weekend and Lilly thought they were leaving when they dropped her off at the bus stop.  THEN….surprise….they walked through the door to be our Mystery Reader!!!  We loved the book they shared with us, Amelia Bedelia’s First Field Trip by Herman Parish.  Thanks for visiting with us!!

  • Sir RAN with excitement when his Mom walked through the door!  Mrs. Carlton surprised us with one of Sir’s favorite stories.  He LOVES the book, The Elf On the Shelf Christmas Tradition by Carol Aebersold and Chanda Bell.  The Kindergartners were so excited to hear the story and share parts of their own stories with their own Elf on the shelf.  Thanks for visiting with us Mrs. Carlton!
  • Then even Mrs. Stutz was surprised by our next Mystery Reader….her son Josh.  He surprised the Kindergartners with a great spring story, Too Many Carrots by Katy Hudson.  The Kindergartners loved asking him questions about college and seeing how big he was…Mrs. Stutz always refers to her boys as babies (doesn’t every mother?).  They loved asking him about illustration, a passion of Josh’s.  Thanks for visiting with us Josh!!
  • Evie didn’t know who to hug first when she saw her Mom and Dad walk through our door as Mystery Readers!  She was sooo excited!!  She kept remembering how Mommy had said she had to work today….so sneaky!!  She snuggled right in to hear the VERY FUNNY story, The Book With No Pictures by B.J. Novak.  The Kinders laughed at all the silly words that Evie’s Dad had to say!!  Thanks so much for sharing this funny book with us!!

  • You could hear Oliver E. shout, “Grandma!” as he saw his Grandma walk through the door as our Mystery Reader.  She read us two favorites of Oliver E.’s Daddy and his brother when they were little.  Sharing with us, We’re Very Good Friends, My Brother and I by P.K. Hallinan and Where Does the Butterfly Go When It Rains by May Garelick.  Thank you for visiting us!!
