October 23 – 27

Popcorn Words:  This week the words like and here popped into our classroom.  Along with our last color word: Brown.  The Kindergarteners found all things brown in our classroom and made their own brown bear story retelling hat.

Writer’s Workshop:  This week we continued to write about small moments.  We wrote small moments that incorporated our popcorn words.  For example, they wrote and drew brown objects and then wrote the sentence, “Here are brown things.”  We focused on adding details to our drawings, labeling and sounding out words.  We wrapped up our small moment writing.  Next week we will begin a new writing unit, writing like a scientist!!

Reader’s Workshop:  This week we wrapped up our practice of retelling stories.  We learned that we can retell a story by using picture, props and even act it out.  The Kindergartners had a blast retelling the story of Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? by Bill Martin, Jr.  They made their own Brown Bear hats and practiced retelling the stories to friends using a picture bookmark.

Math:  This week we continued to work on Unit 2.  We explored shapes, number writing, five groups and adding more to make a new number.  The Kindergarteners have also explored telling more math stories from looking at a picture in our Math workbooks.  Everyday we warm up our Math brain by doing some counting to 100 with, Let’s Get Fit with Jack Hartmann, a Kids Music Channel on YouTube.  The Kindergarteners also enjoy practicing their counting by 10’s by doing a Climbing Up This Mountain by Harry Kindergarten Music.  We are doing a great job of our number awareness and addition and subtraction skills.

Split Lit. Centers:  This week we have done a great job of continuing our new split lit. center activities.   The students are continuing to work on letters, sounds, rhyming and sight words along with handwriting.  Please continue to review these skills at home.  Often as we continue to build on our skills we can slip in recognizing those letters and sounds.  Don’t forget to revisit these skills periodically.   The Kindergarteners have done a great job!!

Bucket Fillers:  Our class has been working on their kindness and helping others over the last few weeks.  We call this being a bucket filler.  They learned about what a bucket filler is by listening to the book Have You Filled a Bucket Today?  by Carol McCloud.  Each Kindergartner has a pocket (bucket) that they can add tickets too when they have been a bucket filler.  I love catching the kids being kind and making great choices.  They get a bucket filler ticket and add the ticket to their bucket.  Then every couple of weeks they receive a treat for their bucket filler tickets.  This week the Kinders received a sucker.  I am so proud of seeing them make such great choices and treat their peers with kindness.  We will continue this the entire school year.  Promoting kindness and helping others always.

A Reminder:  As our cooler weather is nearing closer please be sure to send the appropriate clothing with your Kindergartener for outside recess.

PE Cares Food Drive:  From November 1 – 16 we will be taking donations of canned or non-perishable food items to benefit our local food pantries.  Each time we go to gym we will donate our items.  Please consider donating a few items to help out our school wide effort to stock these pantries for a very busy needy time of the year.

Button’s Travel Update:  Our classroom stuffed animal bear, Button’s has been making his way to the Kindergarteners houses for his sleepover.  It looks like he has been having a GREAT time!!  Thank you for taking such good care of him while he is in your care!!  The Kindergarteners are soooooo excited to get a chance for their overnight with Button’s.  He will make his way to everyones’s home.  Be on the lookout he will be making his way to your home very soon!

Mystery Reader:  Ashton greeted his Mom with a huge hug as he saw  his Mom walk through our door as our Mystery Reader this week.   Mrs. Carter read us the book The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt.  A hilarious story that is a collection of letters written to a child from their crayons.  The Kindergartners loved hearing this story!  Mrs. Carter also brought each of us a super yummy crayon cookie as a treat!  Thanks so much for visiting with us Mrs. Carter!!!  If you are interested in being a mystery reader in our classroom please visit our Mystery Reader tab on the left and sign up through  our signup.com page or email me directly at jstutz1@hpseagles.net to set up a time.

What another fun and wonderful week. I absolutely love the book ‘Have You Filled A Bucket Today’ and I’m so happy that you are reinforcing this in your classroom. What a great way to teach kindness and classroom community.

The Halloween party was so much fun and it was great seeing all the kids in their costumes and having fun! Thanks again for opening your classroom and letti f parents join.
