12/11 – 12/15

Popcorn Words:  it, what.

Math:  This week the Kindergartners explored adding numbers, finding groups of ten in pictures and discovering how the zero disappears in a teen number.  They worked together in small groups to use pennies to show numbers and then taking the ones number to place it over the 0 in a teen number to see how the teen number is made.  Many of them noticed a pattern when we did this.  Discovering that the ones number makes up part of the teen number.  Comments like, “Hey whatever number we add to 10 is in the new number at the end!”

Writers Workshop:  The Kindergartners explored more patterns in writing books this week.   They enjoyed writing a book where the second word changed, The _____ is in the zoo.  They also loved making their polar bear writing craft where they changed the middle word in sentences, I see a ________ looking at me.

Readers Workshop:  We dove deeper into more patterns that we see in books.  Noticing books that have patterns with  a word that changes in the middle.  Also, exploring patterns that have a surprise ending.  An example of a surprise ending was seen in several books we explored.  For example in the book Picnic there was a pattern of mouse finds a _____.  Then on the last page the story ended with Mouse has a picnic!  We learned this is called a surprise ending because it is different than the rest of the pattern in the book.

Gingerbread Man Travel Update:  This week we followed the Gingerbread Man to Canada.  We discovered the landmark Niagra Falls!  The Kinders couldn’t believe how big the falls were!  We imagined being in a boat looking at the falls and looking for the Gingerbread Man.  The Kinders also noticed how the  Canadian flag has red and white like our flag!  The Gingerbread man escaped before we could catch him!!  We then boarded our imaginary airplane and headed to Greenland, the next country he was spotted!  He is a quick little guy!!  The Kinders learned that Greenland is not all green.  Exploring many pictures of the famous landmark, Ilulissat Ice-fjord and all of the amazing animals that live in Greenland.  They were in awe over the amazing ice and beautiful animals in Greenland.  We will keep looking for the Gingerbread man in Greenland and then return to our last country to hopefully catch him next week!!  We also enjoyed a couple new versions of the story, The Gingerbread Man Loose on the Fire Truck and The Gingerbread Cowboy.

What a fun and busy week you had last week! Madison happened to get a children’s atlas for her birthday and she opened it right up and pointed to a spot and said, “this looks like Greenland”. (-: I was laughing that Greenland was the country she picked out in her atlas, but now I know why.

Time with 5th grade buddies is so special and fun. Madison loves when you have that time.

We also loved the Christmas program. What a wonderful job all of the kids did.

That is so awesome!!! Too funny, I love that she recalled Greenland!! It’s been a lot of fun in K!!!
