May 21 – 25

Popcorn Words:  Review.  The Kindergartners LOVED hiding sight words to pictures that they drew.

Math:  This week we took our LAST Kindergarten Math test!  These tests will be coming home before the end of the school year.  For the rest of the school year we will be reviewing all of the skills we have learned this year.

Writer’s Workshop:  This week we wrapped up our last writing unit for the year!  The Kindergartners did a GREAT job exploring their opinions on many different topics!!  We did our “on demand” Opinion writing this week.  Each kinder had to tell their own opinion on their favorite restaurant and give two reasons why.  They needed to write their opinion, draw pictures, add sentences and give a star statement at the end.  These assessments will also be coming home before the end of the school year.  We will be doing a variety of writing during the remainder of our school year.  Practicing different writing genres we have done throughout the year together.

Reader’s Workshop:  Wow!  We have really come a long way as readers!!  Our Kindergartners have been practicing stamina and doing VERY well!!  We will continue to work on reading silently for the rest of our year.  We will even get to read with our first grade friends this week as a special treat…shhhh!  The Kindergartners don’t know this yet.  We will also revisit some of the strategies we use as readers.

Social Studies:  We got to learn about a couple of U.S. Symbols this week.  The Kinders loved learning about the American Flag, Statue of Liberty, American Bald Eagle and Liberty Bell.  It has been fun learning about these important symbols of America.  Seeing the Kindergartners find these symbols in books, pictures and environment around them is so exciting!  The Kindergartners really enjoyed doing our own little mini parade with our mini American Flags and hats!!  Also, enjoying a refreshing cold Red, White and Blue popsicle on Friday!!  Celebrating the colors of our American Flag!  We will explore more with U.S. Symbols next week as well.

Mystery Reader:  This week Ashlyn was DELIGHTED to see her Mom walk through the door as our Mystery Reader!  Mrs. Jones read us the hilarious book, Pirates Love Underpants by Claire Freedman and Ben Cort.  The Kindergartners got a kick out of this book!!  A super hilarious book about a group of pirates who love to wear their underpants on the outside of their clothes!!  Thanks so much for visiting with us Mrs. Jones!!
