11/27 – 11/30

Popcorn Words:  an, can, man, ran.  The kindergartners noticed right away that the chunk an is inside the words can, man and ran.  The kinders brought home November sight word flashcards and their sight word books from November this week.  If you need another copy of sight word flashcards please let me know.  With this weeks words the Kindergartners had so much fun hearing a couple different versions of the gingerbread man book.  They LOVED the different stories and noticed right away the pattern in these books.  Hearing the same words on many of the pages as the story progresses.  We munched on our own gingerbread cookie and sipped on milk while making our own gingerbread people.  Many of us had some milk mustaches, some of us added milk mustaches to our gingerbread people too.  We will be adding our gingerbread people to a bulletin board outside our classroom titled, “I mustache you a question…got milk?”  A fun play on the gingerbread story.  The kinders loved it!

Math:  This week we wrapped up our Unit 2 in Math.  The Kindergartners took their second math test.  This will be coming home in the next week.  We will be starting Unit 3 on Monday.  The Kindergartners will be diving into talking about Teen Numbers as Tens and Ones.

Writers Workshop:  This week we finished writing like a scientist.  Those writing samples came home this week with your kinder.  I hope you enjoyed looking through their writing.  We have started a new type of writing, Pattern book writing.  The kinders are exploring patterns in reading as well.  So, we are looking at patterns with our writers eye and readers eye this month.  The kindergartners started their first pattern book as writers.  We worked on a book about ourselves, called I Can.  Each page shows something that the Kinder can do.  Each Kinder practiced being illustrators first and drawing a picture of something they can do and then adding the words to match.  Writing I Can ____ on the pages.  They are doing such a GREAT job as writers!  Their fearlessness to be bold and brave as writers and illustrators is SO EXCITING to me!!

Readers Workshop:  This week we explored finding different patterns in books with our partners.  Noticing that patterns are different.  Some patterns have the last word change or just the first word changes.  The Kindergartners had a lot of fun working with their partners to find these different patterns and then writing the pattern down on whiteboards.  They also explored different ways to talk about their books they have inside their blue book boxes.  The kindergartners were able to talk about a favorite part, find something they thought was cool, explore something they learned or make a connection to the book.  It was fun to see them have these “book talks” with each other.

Book Exchange:  This month we will be having a gift book exchange as a class before we leave for holiday break.  I would love for each kinder to send in a gender neutral book (less than $5) with your kinder by Friday, Dec. 14.  Please wrap the book and include a tag that says who the book is from (To: a friend, From: Mrs. Stutz).  These books can be sent in at any time.

Buttons:  Our furry classroom friend, Buttons, is on his way to your house soon!  He has started his overnight adventure with a couple of kinders so far.  He will get to come home with all of the kinders and spend the night.  We get to do this fun star student activity a second time in the spring as well.  Thanks for helping your child complete the journal page when Button’s travels your way.

Mystery Readers:

  • Charlotte was THRILLED to see her Grandma and Grandpa walk through the door as our Mystery Readers on Tuesday.  Mrs. Becker read us the story Winter Is Here! by Kimberly Weinberger.  A very timely story due to our snow day the previous day!!  Thanks for visiting with us!!

  • Wesley was so EXCITED to see his Grandma and Grandpa walk through our door on Thursday as a Mystery Reader.  Mr. Hamilton read us the hilarious book, How to babysit a Grandpa by Jean Reagan.  The kindergartners had a great time coming up with ideas throughout the book.  Thank you for visiting us!!

Candy Cane Sale:  The annual candy cane sale is here!  our 5th grade classes will be selling candy canes to help raise money for their 5th grade activities.  The sale will be from Monday, Dec. 3 – Friday, Dec. 14.  The cost for each candy cane is $1.  The candy canes will be delivered to our classroom the same day they are ordered.  If your Kinder would like to order please have them bring money in an envelope marked with their name and “candy cane sale” inside their blue folder.  The candy canes will get to be eaten at home, they are delivered at the end of the day.
