12/3 – 12/7

Popcorn Words:  look, from, run.

Math:  This week we started our work on Unit 3 in our Math curriculum.  The students started exploring teen numbers.  Discovering a teen number is a group of 10 and then some ones.  We also met our classroom ten bug, a ladybug that LOVES to see us count our teens.  The Kinders have decided to call her Ella our ten bug!  Ella helps us find a group of ten in teen numbers.  We also learned about number partners and how when they are added together they make a new number.  The kinders practiced using their pencil as a “break apart” stick to show partners in a number sentence.  The kinders LOVED “teaching” each other on the ELMO and showing their work using the x-ray effect.  We are off to a GREAT start in Unit 3!  All Unit 2 Math tests came home at the beginning of the week.

Writers Workshop:  We continued to practice writing pattern books this week.  The Kinders wrote pattern books where the last word changes on each page.  They even were able to write a pattern where the word in the middle changes in a pattern.  We learned that to write a pattern book we need to first think of a topic, then decide what we want to tell about the topic, pick a pattern to use and then put our pages in order.  The kindergartners are practicing starting each sentence with an uppercase letter, putting a finger space between their words, adding punctuation and labeling the pictures.

Readers Workshop:  As readers this week we learned that we are Super Readers!  Super readers have super powers, we focused on our pointer power this week.  The Kindergartners practiced pointing to each word as they read.  We are continuing to use our pointer tools that help us to remember to point to each word as we read.  The kinders learned that we point under each word as we read, making sure that our finger matches the word we are reading.

Gingerbread Man on the Loose:  This week we continued to explore more Gingerbread stories.  Finding patterns on each page while listening to the stories.  We were surprised by a bag that was left at our door from the Gingerbread Man on Friday.  Inside the bag we discovered that the Gingerbread Man was on the loose.  The Gingerbread Man left us 4 postcards from Australia!  He also left us a passport to “travel” and find out more about where he was.  We all decorated our own passports and pretended to board our plane to Australia.  While there we learned a little bit about Australia, reading the Gingerbread Man’s postcards he left us.  We learned that many animals are in Australia, one of them being a Koala.  Also, the Australian flag has the same colors as ours, red, white and blue.  In Australia they speak English just like us too, but they have a different accent than we do.  We didn’t find the Gingerbread Man.  Not yet anyway…we can’t wait to see where he is off to next!

Mystery Reader:

  • On Friday Keller was absolutely THRILLED to see his Mom walk through our door as our Mystery Reader.  Keller’s Mom brought Keller’s elf from home, Cookie Pickle Pants, and read us the book Santa’s Underwear by Marty Figley.  A hilarious story about Santa getting ready to deliver presents and needing his outfit to be just right.  The Kinders got lots of chuckles from this funny book!  Thanks for visiting with us Mrs. Yates!!
