4/15 – 4/19

What a BEAUTIFUL weekend!  I hope you have all had a chance to enjoy this amazing weather!!  Looks like we will have a GREAT week of weather this week as well.

Popcorn Words:  They, These.

Math:  This week we wrapped up our study of Unit 4.  We took the Unit 4 Math test.  These tests will come home soon.  We will begin our Unit 5 this next week.  Our next unit will continue to build on addition and subtraction while using them in solving story problems.  We will deepen our understanding of teen numbers as well.

Writers Workshop:  We have started to work on our “on demand/test” for our All About/Non-fiction writing unit.  The Kindergarteners will wrap up their writing this next week.  They are writing All About Goats.  We have gathered research, organized it and started to write it in our own books.  We are off to a GREAT start!

Readers Workshop:  This week the Kindergartners worked on their reading stamina, finding differences in Non-fiction books and dove into becoming Avid Readers of Poetry.  It was so fun to see the Kindergartners share their Non-fiction books with their reading partners.  They were so eager to share the  similarities and differences in their books.  We talked about how Poetry is a lot like a song.  We hear songs and they get stuck in our heads and we sing them over and over.  So many of the Poetry we know is often sung like a song.  Making it easy for us to remember, allowing us to be Avid Readers/Listeners of Poetry.  We enjoyed the fabulous Baby Shark Poem/Song, Mary Had a Little Lamb, and The Itsy Bitsy Spider.  The kinders have each of these poems and have enjoyed reading/singing them during our read to self time.  This class has a real LOVE for books!  It has been so fun to see their stamina and love for reading to self time grow!!

Rocks:  Collections are due Thursday, April 25.  We are so excited to explore these together!

Maps:  We have started to talk about Maps in our classroom.  Exploring what continent, country, and state we live in.  This is a VERY big concept for the Kindergartners.  They have been so excited to start this exploring!  I will continue to introduce these skills to the Kinders throughout the next couple of weeks.

Living and Non-Living:  We have also started to explore things that are LIVING and Non-Living.  Noticing that Living things need certain things: Air, Water, Food, Light and Shelter to grow and survive.  Also, discovering that things like a rock, chair and ball are NOT living.  This exploration will help us get ready for our field trip coming up on May 7.

Mystery Reader:

  • Charlotte was SOOOO SURPRISED to see her Aunt Molly walk through our door as a Mystery Reader!  Molly read us the hilarious book, Marcel the Shell With Shoes On:  Things About Me by Dean Fleischer-Camp and Jenny Slate.  The kinders LOVED this VERY funny book!!  Thank you for visiting with us and being our Mystery Reader Molly!!

We hatched Eggs:  Well, sort of!  The Kinders decorated a paper egg and then sat on it to keep it warm.  When they returned to the classroom after special they saw that these paper eggs cracked and 2 eggs had hatched!!  They found that inside these eggs were some yummy treats for them to enjoy!  It was fun to see the Kinders enjoy this magical treat!  Also, a BIG thank you to Mrs. Castle for the yummy pretzel/Peeps treats!!

Snack Reminder:  Please be sure to pack 2 snacks for your Kinder.  We have an a.m. and p.m. snack break everyday!  With all of this extra outdoor time the Kinders are extra hungry and ready to snack.  Our Graham Cracker classroom supply is running low, any donations would be greatly appreciated.

Cleaning:  We try to keep our classroom as germ free and as clean as we can.  To help with this process we like to wipe our tables off daily with a Clorox Cleaning Wipe.  We are running low on these supplies as well.  If you are able and would like to donate a container of Clorox (or any other kind) of cleaning wipes it would be greatly appreciated!

Field Trip:  Our Spring Field Trip will be on Tuesday, May 7.  Our class, along with Mrs. Baker’s Kindergarten class will be going to Hemlock Crossing Nature Center.  We will plan to arrive at Hemlock Crossing by 10:00 a.m.  After some learning adventure we will then travel to Hager Park for a picnic lunch and some play time.  The Chaperones have been contacted.  All parents and younger siblings are welcome to attend our Hager Park picnic lunch and play time.  So, if you don’t get to go to the first part of our field trip you are all welcome to attend our second part of the field trip at Hager Park.

Fun at Free Choice Time:  These series of pictures show the amazing creativity that these Kinders have during their Free Choice Time!  Check out their super cool creations and how TALL their structure got!!
