4/29 – 5/3

Popcorn Words:  have, on, of

Math:  We continued to work on our knowledge of number sentences that equal 10.  The kinders practiced looking at pictures of things that were in groups.  Finding groups of 10 and then some more to show teen numbers as well.  We worked on telling story problems and then writing addition number sentences.  We are really growing in our teen number sense.  They LOVED writing 1-100 in different marker colors this week too.  With excitement I heard many times, “It’s just like our 100 chart in our classroom!”  I LOVE their excitement about Math!!

Writers Workshop:  We have finished our exposure into How-to writing.  The Kindergartners loved getting a glimpse into this genre of writing.  Noticing how a How-to has steps, drawings and words that tell the reader what to do.  This week we wrapped up with writing about How-to make a sandcastle, How-to wash our hands, How-to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and How-to make a tornado in a bottle.  The kinders LOVED their How-to’s placed around the sinks in our classroom.  We also wanted to share our How-to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with our cafeteria lunch ladies.  They LOVED our writings!!  I wish we had MORE time to explore more How-to’s!!  However, with our snow days and limited time to complete curriculum we have to move on next week to Opinion writing.

How-To Videos:  Although we need to move on in our writing….IF your child would like to create a How-To video and you would like to send it to me so they can share it with their classmates, I know the Kinders would LOVE IT!!!  We have had the chance to watch a few How-TO videos that kids have made and the class has LOVED THEM!!!  I know they would just eat up a How-To video starring their classmate.  SOOOOOO, feel free to get those cameras rolling and make a How-To video with your kinder (only if they want to).  It’s just for fun.  Send them my way and I will make sure their classmates get to view them together.

Readers Workshop:  The Kindergartners have done a GREAT job remembering all of their superpowers as readers.  We have worked on asking questions as we read this week.  Discovering that if we ask questions as readers we remember what we read and we comprehend as we read.  The Kinders also learned how to report on a topic or book they read.  Sharing the information they learn in a book by making a report.  We had a lot of fun with these “just in” breaking news reports after we read our scholastic Let’s Find Out on Rainbow Plants.  The kinders got to talk into the speaker system and I played the news reporter asking them breaking news questions!!  It was so much fun!

Rocks:  This week we learned about Metamorphic and Igneous rocks.  The kinders had fun making their own Metamorphic rock by using 3 different starburst bites.  They added pressure with their hands and heat from their mouth to create this edible rock.  We made our Igneous rocks by using these starburst bites and adding EXTREME heat (the microwave).  After our “rocks” melted and cooled we enjoyed these hardened pieces of Igneous rock.

Living and Non-Living:  We have been getting ourselves well versed in all things Living and Non-Living.  The Kinders have learned that Living things need food, water, air, shelter, space, and sunlight to grow.  We got to plant our own seeds (beans) this week.  The Kinders have been patiently watching for sprouts and signs of growth each day!  Hopefully, we will see some changes this week….come on sunshine!!  We have also added some caterpillars to our classroom.  The kinders have been so excited to see what changes they have made already.  There are 6 caterpillars that have already started to grown and make their way up to the top of the container they are in preparation for their next stage of life…chrysalis!
