5/20 – 5/24

Thank you to all of those who served our country in the military.  I honor your service and your memory.  I am wishing all of the Kindergarten families a wonderful Memorial Day weekend!

Popcorn Words:  Review.  This week we are reviewing our popcorn words (sight words) that have popped into our classroom all year long.  The Kinders have had fun identifying those words in our daily morning messages and in our literacy stations and word study time throughout the day.  The Kindergartners were taught 2 fun games to practice sight words.  One of the games was a bingo game.  A packet of these tools to play bingo sight words was sent home with each Kinder.  These can be used in the summer for extra practice.  They also played a fun popcorn word game.  Each kinder got their own popcorn box and put “popcorn” words inside the box.  We popped the popcorn and then pulled out pieces to read the sight word on each kernel.  This game will come home too!  Another game that can be used over the summer for extra sight word practice.

Math:  We are still plugging away at Unit 5.  This week the Kinders practiced making numbers equal by either adding more or taking away.  They have also enjoyed playing “mingle,”  a fun warm-up for Math.  Mingle is a game where the kinders walk around the room quietly and then when I say a number they make a group of that number of students up and then sit in that group.  They have become Math lovers!!  They LOVE to do more and more Math every day!!  We will wrap up this unit this next week and take our LAST Math test as Kinders!!

Writers Workshop:  This week we wrapped up our Opinion writing unit.  The Kinders finished their “on demand/test” of this writing unit by deciding which restaurant was their favorite.  Then they needed to add 2 reasons why they liked the restaurant.  Finishing it with a “wrap-up” sentence.  They did a wonderful job!!  Opinion writing has been fun to explore.  We will be doing “review” writing for the rest of the school AND creating some special pieces for the end of our school year.

Readers Workshop:  We are continuing to work on our reading stamina and superpowers as readers.  It has been SOOOO exciting to see their growth as readers!  We are continuing to build our confidence as readers and develop our skills further as our year ends together.  Still working in small groups and whole groups to learn new words, reading strategies and grow as readers to the very end!  We have a classroom full of AVID readers!!

U.S. Symbols:  The Kindergartners have had lots of fun talking about and identifying U.S. Symbols.  We found that symbols are a mark, sign or word that means something.  The kinders discovered that there are symbols all around us!  They drew pictures of symbols that they were already very familiar with.  For example, the golden M means McDonald’s, a Nike swoosh, the Meijer sign, D for Detroit Tigers, and many more.  With our upcoming holiday, Memorial Day we talked all about U.S. Symbols this week.  The Kinders explored many of these amazing symbols of our country (Our flag, Statue of Liberty, Mount Rushmore, Liberty Bell, the White House, and the Bald Eagle to name a few).  They had fun hearing books about these symbols.  We also enjoyed making a craft of the Statue of Liberty.  During Word Study this week we dove deeper into our reading skills and read informational texts and then pulled out information from the reading to answer questions.  Friday, Mr. Stutz surprised us with a special popsicle treat (red, white and blue rocket pops).  Thanks for visiting with us, Mr. Stutz!  We loved having our own American Flag as well, to wave proudly as we left for the Memorial Day weekend!
