11/4 – 11/8

Thank you for sharing your child with us!  We treasure the fact we get to be part of their journey.

Popcorn Words:  am, are, little

We had lots of fun celebrating all the color words we have learned by wearing a rainbow of colors on Friday.  The Kinders loved creating an edible rainbow and creating a torn paper rainbow craft.

Math:  This week in Math the Kinders explored practicing writing more numbers 1-8.  Also, drawing objects to match those numbers.  They also loved telling math addition and subtraction stories.  We even worked on making numbers 7 and 8, showing these numbers as groups of 5 and then more.  The Kinders loved finding their own groups of 5 on their hands and feet as well, 5 fingers on one hand and 5 toes on one foot.  We practice making numbers larger than 5 by putting a group of 5 on one side and then more to make a number.  The Kinders practice by taking 5 and putting it in their head and then counting on with more on their fingers.

Writers Workshop:  This week the Kindergartners focused on writing a narrative story.  The Kindergartners learned that a narrative story is a true story, something that happened to them.  We picked a story that we all experienced, Sydney’s birthday that we celebrated on Monday.  First, the Kinders told the story to a friend, telling the story, focusing on who was there, where it happened and what happened.  Then we illustrated this story from the beginning, middle to end.  Writing it over 3 pages.  The Kindergartners also wrote words to match their pictures.  Adding labels, speech bubbles and lots of details to pictures so that readers could really picture in their minds what happened in our story.  They did a GREAT job!

Readers Workshop:  We are becoming super readers and have started to use our “super reading powers.”  This week the Kindergartners worked hard on practicing their Pointer Power.  Making sure each word gets one tap.  They also sharpened their snap word power.  Finding snap words (sight words, popcorn words) in books they read.  On Friday, we were able to practice reading with our reading buddies by sitting back to back while looking at our books in our black book boxes.  The Kinders engaged in using their pointer power and snap word power.  They did AMAZING!!!

Mystery Reader:  Celia jumped for joy when she saw her Mom walk through our door as our Mystery Reader this week.  Mrs. Moreen read us The Three Little Tamales, a twist on The Three Little Pigs.  The Kinders LOVED this story!  Thanks so much for coming and reading to us Mrs. Moreen!!

Snow:  Winter arrived this week!  The Kinders were sooo excited to see the snow and wear their snow gear!  Thank you so much for sending your child in all their gear.  I know it seemed to arrive all of sudden.  Please be sure to mark your child’s winter gear with their name, on a tag, anywhere you can find.  This helps us know who’s items are who’s.  Please let us know if you need any help in providing winter gear for your child.  We have amazing resources at Georgetown Elementary.
