11/11 – 11/15

*Thank you for your patience with the changing of our blog “theme.”  We always strive to make it mobile and computer friendly.  This theme seems to be most helpful with access to both.  Oh, the fun of technology.

Veterans Day:  On Monday we learned and celebrated Veterans Day.  We read about Veterans in our Scholastic News and then made a Veteran craft.  The Kinders loved making their soldier craft.  Thank you to all who are serving or have served in the military.

Popcorn Words:  or, for

Math:  This week the Kindergartners worked hard on discovering shapes that are triangles and not triangles.  Exploring more shapes like circles, hexagons, trapezoids, and pentagons.  They also told addition and subtraction stories while looking at a picture.  We also practiced writing our numbers 6 and 7.

Literacy:  The Kindergartners are working hard during our literacy time every day.  They work on skills that help build and develop their reading skills.  Skills like stretching sounds in words, identifying that sometimes letters make different sounds, also writing in their journals, and finding popcorn words in books.  The Kinders have already grown so much in developing these skills!

Writers Workshop:  We continued to work on writing our narrative/real stories in writing this week.  The kinders focused on thinking of a real story that happened to them.  Telling the story to a friend and then writing the beginning, middle, and end of their story in a 3-page writing booklet.  The Kinders loved adding speech bubbles to their stories this week too.  Helping readers see that someone was talking in their story.

Readers Workshop:  This week we continued learning about our Super Reader Powers!  We practiced reading using our Pointer Power, Snap Word Power, Partner Power, and Picture Power.  The Kinders worked so well practicing partner power while reading The Itsy Bitsy Spider.  They loved finding snap words in books too.  The Kinders loved raising a hand in the air and showing a popcorn burst whenever they found their popcorn words.

P.E. Cares:  Wow!  Thank you so much for the donations this week for our P.E. Cares.  We were able to take 34 donation pieces to Gym this week.  Our last day of our P.E. Cares food drive will be Thursday, Nov. 21.

Mystery Readers:

  • On Monday Palmer and Conner were SO EXCITED to see their Dad walk through our door as our Mystery Reader!  Mr. Harring read us the story, The Berenstain Bears: Kindness Counts by Jan Berenstain and Mike Berenstain.  A timely story during our Thankful theme this month.  Thank you for visiting with us Mr. Harring!

  • On Wednesday Addison was THRILLED to see her Mom and big brother Jacob (a 3rd grader here at Georgetown Elementary) surprise us as our Mystery Readers!  Mrs. Schroeder read us the book, The Thankful Book by Todd Parr.  Then Jacob read us the book How Zebras Got Their Stripes by Lesley Sims.  We LOVED hearing these stories!!  Thank you for surprising us and reading to us Mrs. Schroeder and Jacob!!

Report Cards and Conferences:  On Friday your Kinders brought home a Conference Reminder slip.  This slip has your conference date and time on it.  Our conferences are held in our classroom and will be 15 minutes in length.  During our conferences, we will give you your Kinders report card.  We will get the opportunity to discuss the report card and share your Kindergartner’s progress with you.  Our Book Fair will also be open during our conference evenings.  You are welcome to stop in and purchase books if you would like.  We will also be previewing the book fair this week as a class.  The Kinders will be bringing home a wish list of books.  Our class will also get to buy books this week on Wednesday or Thursday if you would like.  Please reach out to us if you have ANY questions, jstutz1@hpseagles.net and ablauwka@hpseagles.net.
