12/2 – 12/6

Popcorn Words:  look, from, run, ran

Math:  This week the Kindergartners worked on teen numbers.  They were introduced to our friend the “ten bug” who loves to fly around the room and hear them count those teen numbers.  The Kindergartners also found groups of 10 in teen numbers by counting objects.  We are also working hard on continuing to explore addition and subtraction.

Writers Workshop:  This week was filled with several Gingerbread stories during writing time.  The Kinders got to hear a different Gingerbread story and then focus on one of the many writing skills we learned when writing in their Gingerbread writing packet.  For example, after we heard The Gingerbread Girl we practiced using speech bubbles in our writing.  Then, after hearing The Gingerbread Man we focused on writing our sentence to neatly and using an uppercase letter to start and a period to end.  Making sure it is easy for readers to read.  After hearing The Gingerbread Baby we focused on identifying a feeling when we write.  The Kinders LOVED hearing all of these Gingerbread stories and worked hard on focusing on specific writing skills.  They really enjoyed sharing their packets with their friends too.  Giving compliments and celebrating their hard work!

Readers Workshop:  In Readers Workshop this week the Kinders practiced using all of their reading superpowers!  They added more books to their black book boxes.  The Kinders love to “shop” for books each week to add to their book boxes.  We also added 3 “good fit” books to their boxes.  Giving them books that are at or near their tested reading level to help them sharpen their reading skills.  We celebrated all of our superpowers that we have learned in this reading unit.  The Kinders loved making their own Reading Super Hero bracelet on Friday.

Literacy Centers:  The Kindergartners are doing such a GREAT job during our Literacy Center time.  Each day the Kinders get to rotate to 2 different centers where they practice specific skills to build their knowledge of sounds, words, and phonemic awareness.  All skills that grow their ability to become independent readers.  We have volunteer opportunities on Wednesday and Thursday during our Literacy Center time.  If you are interested please check out our Volunteers opportunities on the right side of our blog, literacy centers.

Handwriting:  The Kinders have worked hard on their writing of lowercase letters.  Each week the Kinders get to work in a small group with a teacher to practice writing.  When they finish a group of letter writing they get to bring home their packet to share with you.  We will continue to practice each lowercase letter “family” and then move into uppercase letters.

Star Student: The Kindergartners are SOOO EXCITED about our second Star Student activity.  Our furry classroom friend, Buttons gets to come home with each Kinder for a sleepover!  Buttons comes with his own backpack with instructions inside of how to do his homework for the night (a journal page).

  • Celia was thrilled to bring Buttons to her dance class and loved giving him a bath!
  • Violet had fun taking Buttons to a park with her own puppy!

We can’t wait to see what new adventures Buttons will have with all of our Kindergarten friends!

Mystery Readers:

  • April was SOOO EXCITED to see her Mom walk through our door as our Mystery Reader!  Mrs. Zuiderveen read us the HILARIOUS book, The Wonky Donkey.  Thanks for visiting with us Mrs. Zuiderveen!!

  • We surprised all of the Kinders with a Mystery Reader that they see almost every day…..Mrs. Snow!  Mrs. Snow read us the book Pig the Elf.  Thanks for reading to us Mrs. Snow!!

  • Nora was SOOOOO EXCITED to see her Mom surprise us as our Mystery Reader.  Mrs. VanSlyke read us The Dish Ran Away With the Spoon.  Thank you so much for being our Mystery Reader Mrs. VanSlyke!

North Pole Ninja Missions:  This week the Kinders were given a mission by a visiting North Pole Ninja in our classroom.  This Ninja leaves us “kindness missions” to complete.  Leaving a kindness bag for an unsuspecting class.  This week our first mission was to leave a bag (with fun erasers inside) outside our 5th-grade buddies classroom door.  Each table team in our classroom will get a chance to complete a Ninja “kindness mission.”  This has been a fun way to spread kindness during this time of year!

Holiday Class Party:  Our party is scheduled to be on Thursday, Dec. 19 from 2:00-3:00 p.m.  The planning is underway.  A list of donations will be coming soon.  We do have 2 more spots open if you would like to attend our holiday party.  Let us know if you would like to attend by sending us an email at jstutz1@hpseagles.net or ablauwka@hpseagles.net as soon as possible.

Holiday Music Program:  On Thursday morning (10-11:00 a.m.) our class will be taking a bus to Fair Haven Church in Hudsonville to practice for our Music Program that evening.  Please plan to have your Kindergartner at the church (Fair Haven Church – 2900 Baldwin Street, Hudsonville) by 6:15 p.m.  The Kindergartners will be meeting their teachers in the large multi-purpose room-located directly across from the sanctuary.  Your Kinder will stay with us and get ready for their performance.  You will get to keep their coat and find a seat.  If the past plan is used then after our Kindergartners perform they will leave the stage and sit with their classmates and teachers to watch the rest of the show (first and second graders perform).  Once the show is finished then you will get to come and collect them from us.  Please feel free to contact us with any questions.
