12/9 – 12/13

Popcorn Words:  what, was, it.  The Kindergartners did a GREAT job writing and finding these words this week.  We talked about how “what” and “was” are tricky words.  When we sound them out the letters don’t make the “usual” sounds.

Math:  This week in Math we continued to work on teen numbers.  The Kindergartners practiced writing teen numbers, identifying numbers and drawing circles to match numbers.  We also had a lot of fun practicing adding and subtracting holiday candy corn filling and emptying Santa’s sleigh.

Writers Workshop:  The Kindergartners did a GREAT job this week of continuing to work on their true story writing.  They practiced using their checklist once they finished writing stories.  Making sure they added labels, speech bubbles, started sentences with uppercase letters, making sure that writing was easy to read and that their sentences matched their drawings.

Readers Workshop:  This week the Kinders learned that practicing reading helps us read smoothly.  The more we use our reading superpowers the stronger they become.  We also noticed the punctuation in sentences.  Learning that a question mark is used to asking.  We worked at finding answers to questions when we saw this punctuation as we practiced being readers this week.

Mystery Readers:

  • On Tuesday we were treated to a first grade Mystery Reader, Elija Freed.  Elija was a Kindergartner in my class last year.  He was eager to come and visit us and read to our class.  He read us the book Parts and Not a Box.  Two hilarious books!  It was awesome to hear his amazing reading skills!  Thanks for visiting Elijah!!

  • On Thursday our birthday boy Hudson was surprised by his big sister, Brooklyn as our Mystery Reader.  Brooklyn is a prior student of mine and a first-grader at Georgetown.  Hudson was so surprised to see Brooklyn, little brother Owen and his Mom!!  Brooklyn read us the book If a T-Rex Crashes Your Birthday Party.  Thanks for visiting with us Brooklyn, Owen and Mrs. Vaiana!!
